Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Tasting Notes

Release Date: Spring 2021

What do we love about this wine, beyond its beauty, is its matchlessness. No other wine from the Santa Cruz Mountains represents this part of our appellation. The final blend (82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11 % Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec) combines the historical grapes of Bordeaux sourced from impeccable local vineyard sites, either farmed or supervised by our Mount Eden team.

This wine has intense black cherry, red currant, and indescribable “walk in our forest” aromas. Youthful on the palate with abundant tannins, the flavors of deep currant, blueberry, and earth are penetrating. Expect a beautiful evolution over the next two decades.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. A rush of floral and spice notes leads into a core of racy purplish fruit. Lavender, sage, mint and a whole range of savory Cabernet aromatics play off the natural richness of the year so well. The 2017 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from Domaine Eden plus non-estate vineyards in Los Gatos and Saratoga, along with Merlot and Cabernet Franc from Mount Eden. That blend works so well. I loved it for its power and density. More importantly, the 2017 is a huge overachiever and a screaming value. —A.G.

Cellar Selection

Dark and brooding aromas of black plum and elderberry meet with oak, mahogany and loamy soils on the nose of this bottling. The wine is extremely structured on the sip, with elements of chiseled graphite, lava rock and pencil shavings, as well as those dark fruits and spicy woods. Drink now through 2034.—M.K.

Zesty, with loganberry and boysenberry fruit notes showing good energy from the get-go, while anise, floral and mesquite notes fill in throughout. Sleek and fresh in feel, with the fruit showing a finishing kick on the mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2027. — JM

Lots of Bordeaux-like black herbs, scorched earth, lead pencil, and graphite, as well as ripe black cherry and mulberry fruits, emerge from the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, a medium-bodied, fresh, focused, nicely concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon from the Santa Cruz Mountains. It needs a good decant if drinking any time soon, but it’s balanced, pure, and can evolve for 15+ years if stored correctly. It’s beautifully done. Maturity 2022 – 2037

17.5 (about 92-93 on the 100-pt. scale)

Contains 11% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petite Verdot and 1% Malbec. Ages for two years in a combination of French and American oak. Very dark garnet. Smells of rich black-cherry and tobacco-leaf notes. Juicy graphite, black-cherry and cedar notes are wrapped in a muscular fist of tannins. Excellent acidity and lovely balance with cigar-box finish. Excellent. (AY)
